  15. Cracking Down On Neo-Nazis

  17. <p>    Right-wing groups in West Germany have grown increasingly
  18. visible recently, but authorities last week drew the line at
  19. just how far such movements may go. Bonn banned the 170-member
  20. neo-Nazi National Assembly political group, confiscating
  21. ammunition, knives and swastikas during nationwide raids on
  22. offices and members' apartments. "This strike against neo-Nazis
  23. should be seen as an unmistakable warning signal," said
  24. Interior Minister Friedrich Zimmermann. "West Germany will not
  25. be a playing field for right-wing extremism."

  27. <p>    The raids came only ten days after the new-right party, the
  28. Republicans, won a startling 7.5% of the vote in West Berlin
  29. city elections. Zimmermann said the ban on the National
  30. Assembly did not affect the Republican Party, because it is not
  31. considered "extremist." As for the National Assembly group,
  32. leader Michael Kuhnen, who remained free despite the ban,
  33. announced the formation of a new neo-Nazi party.
